Transfer Edge Enrollment

Transfer Edge Enrollment will open in late April 2022. Transfer Edge is an OPTIONAL early start program available to NEW UCI Transfer Students.

Transfer Edge enrollment for summer 2021 is now closed.

The 5 Steps to Enrollment

A key part of Transfer Edge features a presentation series known as INSIDE UCI. These presentations by prominent UCI faculty will give you a “front row seat” to the diverse academic paths and current research of UCI faculty. You will be able to ask them questions about their academic journeys, how they became interested in research, and why they do what they do. Transfer Students are required to attend at least TWO of these events per the UNI STU 196 course requirements.

Step 1 - Submit your Statement of Intent to Register

Submit your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) by June 1, 2022.

Step 2 - Academics

Review the Academic Course sections below before enrolling. UNI STU 196 is required for Transfer Edge participation. This course will automatically populate in the online Transfer Edge enrollment form.

Step 3 - Financial Aid (optional)

Financial Aid is available for students enrolling in summer courses for 2022. Please visit the Financial Aid page for more information.

Step 4 - Enroll

Transfer Edge: Transfer Edge Enrollment Online Application for Session II due by July 14, 2021 for all students.

PROGRAM WAIVER: Students will be able to complete our program waiver digitally through the online enrollment form. If you would like to view the 2022 waiver you may do so here.

International Students: If you will need an F-1 student visa to study at UC Irvine when you arrive to campus, your I-20 documentation or F-1 visa transfer will be processed by the UCI International Center. Contact their office to confirm additional steps, if any, to transfer your I-20 to UC Irvine. Follow the instructions given in your UCI Admissions correspondence. It is your responsibility to complete the necessary steps to obtain your visa with UC Irvine. Students are encouraged to complete any visa processes in early June to ensure they are approved to participate in Transfer Edge.

Step 5 - Health Insurance

USHIP Health Insurance

Enrollment in Transfer Edge does not include medical or other types of insurance. Students may enroll in the Voluntary Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) for the program dates of early August through late September. Students who will not be covered during the program by a major medical health insurance should strongly consider enrolling in Voluntary UC SHIP.

More information on UC SHIP is also available.

Please note that all registered UCI students are automatically enrolled, beginning their first fall quarter (Fall 2022), in the University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) in fall, winter, spring and summer terms. While the UC SHIP fee will be included in your Fall 2022 registration fees, it is not included in your preceding summer 2022 registration fees.

Enrolled Transfer Edge students will receive additional information regarding enrollment in the Summer Session Voluntary UC SHIP within their Welcome E-mail. If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office by phone at (949) 824-7649 or by e-mail at

Academic Courses

By taking classes in the summer, students have the opportunity to acclimate to the expectations of UC Irvine coursework and begin completing major courses and/or general education requirements before the Fall Quarter begins. Smaller classes during Summer Session also means more one-on-one time with professors or TA’s!

University Studies 196 (required for Transfer Edge)

The 2-unit course is designed to help you make a successful transition to the University of California, Irvine, and develop strategies that will enhance your University experience. Through lectures, discussion, course assignments, and special events, you will learn about campus resources and programs that support your transition and enhance your academic development.

You will also be introduced to the social sciences and the research university – specifically the UC system and UC Irvine. You will explore what research looks like across various disciplines in the modern research university. The course will also provide you with an opportunity to practice the many skills, such as engaging with a professor, necessary for becoming a successful student, researcher, or practitioner!

University Studies 196 meets during Session II only.

Additional Courses

The number of additional courses you take will vary on how many sessions you attend (Session I, Session II, or Full Summer). Most courses are 4 units. Enrollment in 6-8 units reflects a full course load in a single summer session. Remember, Transfer Edge takes place during Summer Session II only but students are welcome and encouraged to take courses during Session I if they wish to maximize their earned units and cost savings through pay for 8.

There are over 800 different courses offered during Summer Sessions I, II, and the 10-week session.

Please visit our Courses page to search for other available courses. We recommend that you exercise care in selecting your additional courses.

Consider the following ways to make use of Summer Session:

We suggest you enroll in coursework that you are certain will fulfill your graduation requirements.

Complete prerequisites for courses that you plan to take during the year.

Take a course that does not relate to your chosen field but looks interesting – summer at UCI is a time of possibility: take a course that was not available at your previous school or one that you will not have time for during the year!

Transfer Edge is only available in Summer Session II.

You can choose to take advantage of the “Pay for Only 8” Incentive Program by enrolling in Summer Session I. Enrollment in Full Summer allows students to complete an entire quarter of coursework before Fall Quarter begins. For example, in Session I, you might enroll in one elective course (typically 4 units). In Summer Session II, you would enroll in University Studies 196 (2 units) and one elective course (typically 4 units).

Transfer Edge: International Students

International students must enroll in the number of units and types of instruction that satisfy the requirements of their student visa. Please work directly with UCI Admissions and the UCI International Center to ensure you meet the requirements of your visa.

As an international student participating in Transfer Edge International student, you will enroll in University Studies 196 (2-units) with other Transfer Edge students, and an elective course(s)of your choice.

Academic & Transfer Student Support

To ensure academic success, all Transfer students taking courses with Summer Session will have access to the UCI Learning and Academic Resource Center (LARC) and the Transfer Student Center. At LARC, students will find many useful academic resources including study skills workshops and small-group academic assistance. Individual tutoring may also be available to students for a small fee.

The Transfer Student Center is a “Home Away from Home” on campus which provides specialized workshops, a space to interact with staff advisors and fellow undergraduate transfer students, and an environment to discuss any issues or share transfer experiences. The Transfer Student Center also provides amenities such as free coffee, refrigerator space, and student snacks, making it a comfortable environment to study and meet others. (Please note some of these services are currently suspended in light of public health guidelines).

As part of Student Success Initiatives (SSI) the Summer Edge counselors and mentors are please to offer Transfer Boost during Session I. Learn more
