UCI allows a student to submit a preferred name that will appear in place of the student’s legal name in certain University related records.

Preferred Names
Students who are interested in submitting a preferred name, may do so by following the instructions on the Registrar’s website.
Please note that a UCInetID is required to submit a preferred name. Students who do not have a UCInetID will need to wait until one is generated before you can submit a preferred name.
Incoming UCI Students: All incoming UCI students who have not yet activated their UCInetID will need to do in order to be able to submit a preferred name on the Registrar’s website.
Visiting Students: All visiting students enrolling in Summer Session course(s) for the first time, who do not already have a UCInetID and/or UCI ID will receive one within 24 to 48 hours. Once you receive your UCInetID, you will need to activate it before you can submit a preferred name on the Registrar’s website.
- Audit: If you are a visiting student (without a UCInetID or UCI ID) and enrolled in ONLY a course as an ‘Audit’, then you CANNOT receive a UCInetID or UCI ID. Please contact our office for further information and/or questions.
