Exams for Online Courses

Asynchronous Exams – Online courses may require the completion of exams online. These exams may have set dates for completion but large windows to accommodate flexibility for students. For example, a course may have a final exam on Tuesday, July 28th, with a window of 8am to 10pm for students to complete. Students may have a set time to complete the test once they begin, but they can begin anytime within this window.

Synchronous Exams – Online courses with exams scheduled at set time that are completed online. These courses will be listed with a set course meeting time with an ONLINE location which will reflect the set times for any exams. An additional note will be listed on the course. Students will be required to participate and attend courses during the listed meeting time. Students should not enroll in online and/or on campus courses if course meeting times overlap. There will be no exceptions or accommodations given by instructors or Summer Session due to scheduling conflicts.

Proctored Synchronous Exams – Online courses may use third-party services to assist with exam facilitation such as ProctorU. These courses will be listed with a set course meeting time with an ONLINE location which will reflect the set times for any exams. An additional note will be listed on courses utilizing these services. Students should not enroll in online and/or on campus courses if course meeting times overlap. This service allows test-takes to complete their exams, while still ensuring academic integrity for the institution. Test-takes can take exams from home, work, or anywhere with reliable internet access while utilizing a computer and webcam. Courses with proctored online exams will require a nominal fee for the proctoring of these exams. All proctored online exam fees are the responsibility of the student.

In-person Exams – Online courses may require in-person on-campus exams. These courses will be listed with a set course meeting time with an on-campus location which will reflect the set times and location for any exams. An additional note will be listed on the course. Students should not enroll in online and/or on campus courses if course meeting times overlap. There will be no exceptions or accommodations given by instructors or Summer Session due to scheduling conflicts.

If an online course requires an on-campus exam, and you are not within driving distance of the UCI campus (anywhere outside of Southern California), you can ask your professor about taking the exam at a remote testing location. Once you have discussed this request with your professor and have received permission, the UCI Academic Testing Center will assist you with finding a remote testing location. Please note, you must make arrangements for a remote testing location several weeks in advance before the exam date or this request cannot be arranged. All remote testing fees are the responsibility of the student.
