Top 10 Reasons for Enrolling in Summer Session

1. Getting a head start at UCI. Incoming freshmen and transfer students can take courses early and get a head start at UCI.
2. Accelerate progress towards your degree. Taking summer courses allows students to take additional credits and graduate faster. This can save money on tuition and allow students to enter the workforce or graduate school sooner.
3. Prepare for your career. Summer is a great time to make progress towards a 2^nd degree or a minor.  You can also take individual courses that interest you or better prepares you for grad school or a career.
4. Reduce your load during the Fall, Winter and Spring. Get ahead during the summer to free up time during the year to pursue internships or research opportunities.
5. Take courses from wherever you are in the summer. Over half of the students take online courses during the summer.  Take courses from home or wherever you are during the summer.
6. Smaller classes and more accessibility to faculty. Take advantage of the smaller class sizes during the summer to get to know your instructor and faculty better.
7. Stay on track academically. Take a high-demand course or repeat a course to stay on track towards your degree.
8. Shorter session length. Most courses in the summer are offered in 6-week sessions.  Focus on fewer courses in a more intensive and shorter session.  There are also intensive language courses to complete a year’s coursework in a single summer.
9. Reduced tuition for all UC students. All regularly enrolled students (including international and non-resident students) save when they enroll in more than 8 units during the summer.  Take more classes but pay for only 8 units in per-unit course fees.
10. 8-unit Fee Cap.  All UC students (including incoming Freshmen and transfer students) can have their per-unit course fees waived after paying for 8.

The student experience during Summer Session enables you to build your confidence in entering college level coursework, adjust to the pace of the quarter system (remember, summer is 5 weeks of instruction per session – even more accelerated than a traditional quarter) and ensures that you have found an institution where you know you belong.

How to Enroll

You can enroll, drop, or change your grading option online 24 hours a day. When enrolling online, you will be required to submit payment via a credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express) or use anticipated Financial Aid. Online enrollments are real-time, and you should receive a confirmation page to print at the end of the process. You will also receive an e-mail confirmation and receipt.

Fee Information

The following is a list of fees for the 2023 Summer Session fees based on various enrollments:

*Additional course materials fees (non-refundable) may apply depending on your chosen course. The $279 per unit fee is based on the current UC tuition. The Summer Session tuition is subject to change by action of the UC Regents at any time for all UC campuses, including UC Irvine. Session II course fees are refundable up until August 18th, 2023 with the instructor’s signature.

The $187 mandatory campus fee and applicable course materials fees are non-refundable. Session II courses may be dropped by the deadlines noted above. Drop dates with or without instructor approval for a refund are set by UCI Summer Session.  Financial Aid: If you are applying for summer financial aid, once you have accepted your aid award after enrolling in Summer Session any aid distributed to you will automatically count towards your account balance. Any remaining fees, if any, will be requested from you at that time.

Financial Aid Available

Financial aid is available to assist UCI students in meeting the costs of attending Summer Session. To be eligible you must complete and submit a 2022-2023 FAFSA (not a 2023-2024 FAFSA). Separate from the FAFSA, students who wish to receive financial aid must also complete and finalize the Summer Session Financial Aid Application and any requested documents.
