Modern East Asia

HISTORY 70A (4.0 units)Session I

This course is intended to be a general survey, from approximately 1800 to the present day, of major events and conflicts linking East Asia, including the countries we now commonly know as China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, and Taiwan. We will examine the basic history of these places and focus on many important and contentious issues, with an eye to help you understand the historical experiences of peoples in East Asia and also to bring a more informed opinion to contemporary problems facing East Asia (and the world) today.
