University Writing and Communication

AC ENG 29 (2.0 units)Session II

This course provides students with the essential writing and communication concepts that ensure their success in college contexts. The topics covered in the course include: the purposes of general and discipline-specific, university-level reading, writing and oral language assignments; professor expectations concerning student communication; successful ways to avoid academic dishonesty at the university; effective ways of interacting with professors and classmates in email, in the classroom, and during professors’ office hours; tips for developing academic vocabulary and note-taking skills; strategies for participating in process writing and peer editing; success in developing writing portfolios and in making effective oral presentations. During the course, students improve their communication through course readings and writing assignments as well as projects, which they present individually and in groups. The last assignment is the development of a writing portfolio that includes the students’ writing and represents their knowledge of college-level communication.
