Libraries

Overview

As a summer student, you are encouraged to take advantage of the fine library collections and services available on campus. Your summer identification card, located in the bottom portion of your summer confirmation, entitles you to a library card and borrowing privileges. Simply bring your summer i.d. to any Loan Desk to obtain a library card.

Librarians at UCI offer students expert individualized research assistance and instructional classes. The Libraries hold more than 2.7 million volumes and provide access to approximately 47,000 print and online journals and scholarly resources at three facilities. Additionally two study centers at the Library Gateway Study Center and the Science Library Study Center, in which food and drink are allowed, provide expanded hours of access for studying.

Wireless network access is available throughout the Libraries as well as nearly 600 desktop computers for general use.  Also available are specialized facilities for creating multimedia, advanced computing, and technology-enhanced classrooms.

Innovative services such as Electronic Reserves, and on-line requests for interlibrary loan materials are available to assist students in their studies and research.

Grunigen Medical Library

Located at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center in Orange, the Grunigen Medical Library contains a primary clinical medicine collection of more than 80,000 book and journal volumes. Services include reference assistance, public computers, a technology-enhanced classroom, and an Information Technology Center.

Langson Library

The Langson Library supports teaching and research in arts, humanities, social sciences, education, and business and management.  It features a state-of-the-art Multimedia Resources Center with a computer lab and equipment for playing all types of non-print materials, such as films, videos, and sound recordings.  A Technology Enhanced Classroom for hands-on library instruction also serves as a computer lab when not in use for classes. At the Reference Desk on the first floor, librarians offer many services in support of your studies and research. Current Periodicals/ Newspapers are housed on the second floor and offer a wide selection of scholarly and popular titles, foreign and domestic newspapers, and back issues of newspapers and journals on microform.

Science Library

The Science Library houses UCI’s science, medicine, and technology collections including material in the fields of astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, earth systems science, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and physics. The Science Library provides over 2,000 individual study spaces, over 50 group study rooms, and an extended hours study center. At the Reference Desk on the second floor, expert staff is available for research assistance and consultation, and several computer work-stations provide access to a vast array of electronic journals, research databases and other online resources.  The Science Library also features the Interactive Learning Center (a computer lab and library instruction center.)
